TARDI - Lot 116
TARDI JACQUES TARDI Original illustration for a vignette on page 296 of the illustrated adaptation of Voyage au bout de la nuit by Louis-Ferdinand Céline published by Gallimard in 1988. Signed. India ink, wash and pencil on paper 12 × 32 cm (4.72 × 12.6 in.) Tardi's adaptation of Céline's masterpiece, Voyage au bout de la nuit, was a masterpiece. The literature of the inter-war period was very prim and proper, but the unbearable depictions of war had turned it on its head. The stylistic intertwining and literary effects of Germanopratinism were overturned by a prose that was belched out, ranting and eminently popular. How to translate all this? Tardi does it with his loose, supple, rapid brushstrokes, inherited from Gus Bofa, with just a hint of wash. An important moment in the author's career
