cover of Druillet Lovecraft published by Barbier in 2024.
Signed. India ink and white gouache on paper
84.5 × 65 cm (33.27 × 25.59 in.)
Magnificent illustration of one of Philippe Druillet's best periods: the Vuzz period, contemporary with the founding of Métal Hurlant, of which Druillet was one of the "Humanoïdes Associés". It was produced for Editions Opta, the publisher of Fictions and Galaxie, the major SF publisher of the time, which employed both Jean-Michel Nicollet and Moebius. Here, illustrating Lovecraft's universe, Druillet employs a number of graphic techniques that give the drawing its cachet: a profusion of details in the decor in the manner of 19th-century engravers, a composition organized around the central axis with ink spraying to create a realistic, three-dimensional effect. Between ancient columns, the viscous monsters of the author of Cauchemar d'Innsmouth advance ominously. Every Druillet drawing is a spectacle!
