Coloring: 24 × 31.5 cm (9.44 × 12.40 in.) This is another of those pages where I like to play with contrasts of space and light. Above, in one of the casemates of Château de Kerjean, Agnès confronts the Marquis de Beaucourt, in hunting clothes, dagger in belt, who is holding her prisoner. The spaces are small, in rough stonework, lit by a simple lantern whose black shadows, sometimes immense, accentuate the dramatic aspect. Down below, the sea is immense, with its swell forming. On the poop deck, everyone is bundled up for the cold wind, which has prompted the crew to lower the topsails. On the quarterdeck, Yann is at ease, barefoot, cross-legged, a far cry from the staid attitudes he might have in Versailles. No doubt a remnant of his Guyanese childhood. Patrice Pellerin
