VANCE - Lot 83
VANCE WILLIAM VANCE XIII Spads (T.4), Dargaud 1987 Original plate no. 46. Signed. India ink on paper 43.5 × 60 cm (17.13 × 23.62 in.) This scene is typical of Jean Van Hamme's facetious scriptwriting. SPADS is an intermission in the XIII saga. XIII is still searching for his identity, which he finally finds in the diptych Le Dossier Jason Fly and La Nuit du 3 août. But Van Hamme has fun constantly questioning his identity, since XIII can't remember anything, and in the end can only trust what he's told... Then there's this page, where XIII enjoys the present moment: he's alone in the world with two lovely women... The panel is very spare, abandoning any pathos. But the suspense is at its height. SPADS is precisely the album in which the series took off, achieving the success we know today.
