COSEY - Lot 69
COSEY COSEY JONATHAN Kate (T.7), Le Lombard 1981 Original plate no. 11, prepublished in Le Journal de Tintin n° 36, September 2, 1980. India ink on paper 34.8 × 45.8 cm (13.7 × 18.03 in.) Cosey's Jonathan series is a travelogue of the Himalayan landscapes of overwhelming splendor, of the people in their sincere authenticity, of a culture thousands of years richer, and of the beauty of the moment in all its fullness. It was unheard of at the time, in the Journal Tintin, where adventure was unencumbered by poetry and lined up by the truckload with virile, muscular heroes. And now, this story with no real adventure receives unprecedented public acclaim and the Best Album award at Angoulême in 1982! Cosey had asserted himself, and could now afford his ambitions. The following year, he published À la recherche de Peter Pan, one of the defining albums of the decade. Travel is also an opportunity for unexpected encounters, like this stranger who offers a different view of what you see and feel. It's Kate, who buys the thangka he's been coveting right under Jonathan's nose. This no-nonsense American is, like him, fascinated by Indian culture. She's attractive... But she's got a secret that's locked in the scar she hides in the palm of her hand, and which we find in this panel, one of the album's key sequences.
