CHALAND - Lot 49
CHALAND YVES CHALAND Barge Explorer : Exposition Coloniale 1990, Super Héros 1990 Original illustration published in the catalog. Signed. India ink on paper 25 × 16.2 cm (9.84 × 6.38 in.) In the 1980s, Yves Chaland set out to deconstruct the clichés of the classic Franco-Belgian comic strip. For Chaland, this often produces a joyously ambiguous effect, somewhere between reprobation of a bygone colonialist past and nostalgia for a time when empires were still in their full power. In his impeccable style, Chaland presents a colonialist ready to be served a meal. Humor is the order of the day, because of course a rhinoceros has never been eaten in this way. On the other hand, the black waiter is in no way ridiculous. The characters are drawn "à la Jijé" or "à la Franquin", followed in their movements by a twist (the famous "krollebitche") à la Hergé.
