"Discussion under the trees." I like contemplative discussion sequences in the middle of a setting. No need for spectacular staging, I prefer to keep this effect when necessary. Here, the calm of a very simple, graphic composition, like the one in the first panel, is much more effective. When you're a young artist, you tend to do a lot of plunges and counter-plunges, but these days I find it's better to save them for moments of tension. The staging has to match the tone of the action. The framing of this first square, with the trees cut off at their full height, can be found in certain scenes of Le Grand Mort. In fact, when I draw trees, I focus on their roots; I very rarely show their tops. Graphically, I'm more interested in the roots than the foliage.
