MALLIÉ - Lot 12

VINCENT MALLIÉ
TÉNÉBREUSE
Livre Second (T.2), Dupuis 2022
Original plate no. 36. Signed.
India ink and white gouache on paper
37 × 50 cm (14.57 × 19.69 in.)
"The composition of this plate is very elaborate, with, in the first strip, vignettes of Islen and Arzhur - alone, on either side of the square where they appear face to face. Then, on the rest of the page, Islen is in the center of the panel, and we get so close to his face that we can hear the little voices in his head, symbolically represented by the red butterflies in the crown. The difficulty of this scene was to show that her attention is no longer focused on Arzhur's words, but on the evil butterflies telling her what to do and say. I zoomed in to the point where, in the last frame, their eyes are nothing more than oval shapes. I borrowed the motif of the last image from the Hokais, the little imaginary characters found in Japanese mythology. Once again, I've gone from the figurative to the abstract.
