MALLIÉ - Lot 4
MALLIÉ VINCENT MALLIÉ TÉNÉBREUSE Livre Premier (T.1), Dupuis 2021 Original cover. Signed. Watercolor, India ink and gouache on paper 61 × 46 cm (24.02 × 18.11 in.) "This image, the cover of Volume 1, functions in symmetry with that of Volume 2, in the composition, of course, but also in the tonality of the colors; warm for the first, cold for the other, symbolizing death. Placed side by side, Islen and Arzhur face each other, but cannot see each other. She seems to be holding out her hand, while he is looking at the tip of his sword. It's hard to find a good cover. In this case, I'd gone for direct coloring with watercolors, without really knowing what it would look like. This image was intended for the limited edition, but once completed, we all agreed to reserve it for the main edition. It was a no-brainer. I did it with a certain degree of relaxation, and it was no doubt the release of pressure that allowed me to give way to the instinct born of all my years of experience. So this illustration came rather naturally to me. And if some see it as inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite painters, it's no coincidence, as they were present throughout the making of Ténébreuse."
