Watercolor, colored inks and India ink on paper 45.8 × 60.8 cm (18.03 × 23.94 in.) "In the first Avant la quête album I drew, there's a key scene with red butterflies fluttering through the forest. I loved drawing it because I felt it exuded real power. It left a lasting impression on readers, and here I wanted to return to that atmosphere and try to recapture the strength I felt at the time. These red butterflies are like specks in the green of the jungle; it's very graphic, very beautiful, and I realize that it's symbolic of the tone I've been able to bring to the series. I really like to set the mood, and there's something very Japanese about it that I like. It's been said that my drawing has a certain gentleness about it, and it's true that I prefer calm to the energy of combat; it speaks to me less. In these scenes, my pleasure lies not in the little men beating each other up, but rather when, as in Ténébreuse, I manage to find a mixture of smoke and masses that collide and draw us into an abstract relationship with the drawing."
