GILLON PAUL GILLON ◊ THE CASTAWAYS OF TIME Les Maîtres rêveurs (T.6), Les Humanoïdes Associés 1978 Original plate no. 30 (numbered 84), prepublished in Metal Hurlant n° 29, May 1978. Four phylacteries are produced on supports affixed to the original. India ink on paper 72.7 × 90.7 cm (28.62 × 35.71 in.) Paul Gillon is one of the few classic authors to have survived the century unscathed. In Vaillant, as early as 1947, with Lynx, then in 1950 with Fils de Chine, he established himself as the best French realist cartoonist of his era, a disciple of Alex Raymond, a position from which he will not soon be dislodged. In the 1960s, between France-Soir and Le Journal de Mickey, he was one of the best-paid cartoonists in Paris. When Métal Hurlant arrived in 1975, was he considered old-fashioned? Not at all, with Les Naufragés du temps, a series he created for Hachette in 1974 with Jean-Claude Forest, he was easily part of the modernity of the "Machine à rêver". His plates are huge, as a bone tuberculosis contracted in childhood prevents him from sitting for long. He therefore draws standing up, which explains the amplitude of his gestures.
