RÉGIS LOISEL ◊
PETER PAN
Tempête (T.3), Vents d'Ouest 1994
Original plate no. 31. Signed.
India ink, white gouache and felt pen on paper
32.4 × 45.6 cm (12.76 × 17.95 in.)
There's no doubt that Loisel's mastery is on full display in this episode with its Shakespearean overtones: first of all, in the cutting, with its incredible rapid succession of field-and-counter-fields, wide shots and close-ups, plunges and counter-plunges, set against a stormy sea. After the surprise of Peter Pan and Captain Hook's mutual discovery, there's the surprise of the treasure stolen from him: the fury of the raging elements is compounded by the fury of the Captain, who thunders even more. There's an unrivalled mastery of inking here: admire the multitude of details and their succession in the shots. It's dynamic and, despite its abundance, without heaviness. This is because, above and beyond representation and staging, there is the sheer pleasure of drawing.
