The first strip is missing, as it was reused for the plate no. 16 of Press Gang. Signed. India ink and white gouache on paper 32.2 × 34.7 cm (12.68 × 13.66 in.) Bruce J. Hawker was William Vance's favorite character. He loved these tales of maritime adventure, empathizing with the poor wretches sometimes forcibly conscripted by recruiting sergeants, and rediscovering the squalor and squalor of Dickens's London in the hold of proud Navy ships. But the adventure is there, and all it takes is a boarding or a storm to bring our heroes to life with bravery and courage. In this register, William Vance is unbeatable.
