What makes an author special? What makes him important in the history of comics? The first thing is that he's immediately recognizable. This is the case here, in Vance's lively pen-and-ink drawing. We recognize his style and, above all, his strengths: flawless documentation (the gun, the ship's rigging, the uniform...) and, as we said, a sense of composition that immediately gives his characters an inescapable presence.
