HERMANN
HERMANN Caatinga, Le Lombard 1997 Original plate no. 24. Signed. Watercolor on paper 32.5 × 43 cm (12.8 × 16.93 in.) Marked by the film O Cangaceiro, which gave him an image of Brazil he didn't know he had, Hermann accepted an invitation to a comic strip festival in Rio de Janeiro in 1991. There, he discovered postcards depicting one of the most fearsome gangs of Cangaceiros in history: the Lampião gang. That's all it takes for him to imagine two small farmers, Diamantino and his younger brother Mané, whose father has been killed by Senhor Aristarco y Souza's volantes. They set out to avenge their father, but the murder triggers terrible reprisals that cost their entire family their lives, leading them to join the notorious Cangaceiros, which is what this scene represents. The political and social fiber that Hermann inaugurated with Sarajevo Tango can be seen here, as well as the highly recognizable color scheme, with its monochrome, almost white areas and characters enhanced by bold colors such as the sky.
