MEYER
RALPH MEYER UNDERTAKER Le Mangeur d'or (T.1), Dargaud 2015 Original plate no. 53. Signed. India ink on paper 35.8 × 49 cm (14.09 × 19.29 in.) Ralph Meyer belongs to a line of great Franco-Belgian Western cartoonists that, surprisingly, hasn't dried up in 70 years. It began with Jijé, Jean Giraud, Hermann, François Boucq and Christian Rossi, and has continued with Ralph Meyer and Matthieu Bonhomme. The result is a realistic, sometimes hard-boiled western, but with renewed heroes and themes. The idea of a main character with a very strong identity, like the mortician, had been proposed by Ralph Meyer to Xavier Dorison. In this sequence, the mortician, thought to be a brave craftsman at the service of grieving families, turns out to have a much more charged past than expected... resulting in a tightly-cut scene with an intense climax. Not to be missed.
