HENRY FLEMING'S BATTLE
Dupuis 2024
Original illustration created in 2024,
from the first panel of plate 42 of the album.
Signed. India ink and white gouache on paper
73 × 37.8 cm (28.74 × 14.88 in.)
Facing an almost blinding light, their feet in the grass, brandishing their flags and bayoneted rifles, men ride into battle. Their belligerent faces and decisive postures show that they do not hesitate. Impassive in the midst of this human flood, an unfortunate horse tries to survive, unaware that it too is heading for death. The scenery seems to fade before the carnage to come. All the horror of war suggested in a single image.
It's worth noting that, unlike the young, inexperienced Union soldiers led by officers fresh out of West Point, the Southerners were mostly veterans who'd already fought in Mexico or Texas. That's what I wanted to show in this image: wall-men, bearded, advancing without hesitation. Henry and his buddies are going to have their work cut out against opponents like that, that's for sure!
