A break for Anechka, original illustration
created in 2022. Signed. Watercolor and acrylic
on paper
47.2 × 36.3 cm (18.58 × 14.29 in.)
Jean-Pierre Gibrat comments: "I love this large drawing. There's no red in it, which is very rare for me. I could have tied a red scarf around the character's neck - militia women often wore them. And the sky is a clear blue, which is also very rare in my work. In short, a singular identity. I love this light, this pose, this face focused on lighting the cigarette, this skin reflecting the flame...". The artist is very fond of this young Polish woman who came to defend the Spanish Republic. Perfect composition, trees planted in a Nabi style, light spots where the sun breaks through the foliage ("It's great to do, it always looks good... I don't deprive myself of it!") and even a dog for a warm note, offsetting the presence of the three rifles and the handgun the young woman wears on her belt. For Anechka, with her angelic face, is an exterminating angel. A frenzied giver of death, she will pay a just price. Has she just returned from a massacre? "You never know with her..."
