Mattéo understands that Louis, his biological son, is considered by Juliette, his mother, to be her exclusive property. She puts an embargo on his father reading the letters the boy sends from the front - a coldness subtly expressed by Juliette's facial expression and cross-legged pose. After one of Jean-Pierre Gibrat's favorite night exteriors, the panel ends with the mutilated-eyed face of Mattéo's faithful friend Paulin. The composition of the waffle iron is impeccable, with two vast horizontal squares to express what may be left of avowed passion, then verticals for the time of tension.
