JEAN-PIERRE GIBRAT MATTÉO Sixième époque (1939-1940) (T.6), Futuropolis 2022 Original plate no. 22. Signed. Watercolor and acrylic inks on paper 35.5 × 47.5 cm (13.98 × 18.7 in.) On this balanced plate, look first at Amélie's face, on the left, in the bottom panel: she's as beautiful as a painting. Of course, she's not that pretty - she's simply human. On the bench of this red double decker, she gives herself over completely to the melancholy expressed, in a much more measured way, in the letter she has just posted: "Winter adds to the war its own little note of sadness...". Understand who can - but not necessarily Mattéo. This panel is full of London signs: the letterbox, the telephone booth, the famous red bus, Big Ben and Westminster Bridge. And yet, as she writes, Amélie is only half-adapted to London life. Although the two plates are independent, this one completes Lot 5 like an afterthought: the letter has been written, the words said. Amélie misses France, the beaches of the South, "fantasy ice creams" - and, of course, Mattéo.
