LOT CARITATIF - Lot 168
LOT CARITATIF RIFF REB'S Men at Sea, Soleil 2014 Original plate #9 from the story Un sourire. Signed. India ink, grease pencil and white gouache on paper 29.5 × 42.8 cm (11.61 × 16.85 in.) This work is being sold as part of the charity sale in support of the Ukrainian people. All proceeds will be donated to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). No commission will be charged on this lot. This is my adaptation of a short story by the famous Joseph Conrad, whose full title is Un sourire de fortune. Joseph Conrad, better than anyone, knew how to speak of the loneliness of Captains who, during their long crossings, cannot sympathize too much with their crews in order to preserve their authority. They feel far removed from the affections left behind in the home port, on the quayside of oblivion. This plate accurately reflects this state of melancholy, which makes the officer no longer quite sure whether he belongs at sea or ashore. Riff Reb's
