At Dupuis, until the end of the 1960s, chromists were responsible for putting the pages in color, on the authors' instructions, a method dating from the end of the 19th century. At Lombard and Dargaud, they used blue (or gray) coloring, a process that became popular in the 1940s, which the authors rarely practiced themselves, the exercise being poorly paid. The "direct color" was expensive because it was necessary to make several pauses with color filters and experienced technicians to obtain a "selection" quadri a little drinkable. But in the 1970s, with the advent of computers, small format rotary scanners, and then home scanners, authors were able to take color back into their hands. Enki Bilal, with Lorenzo Mattotti or Jean-Michel Nicollet, was among the first to experiment with this "pictorial comic strip". In this plate, which gives Science-Fiction the Glam Metal dimension of the band Kiss, Bilal multiplies the chromatic audacities. He develops a pictorial grammar of his own, especially in the treatment of materials mixing gouache and Indian ink. It is only recently that he has been working in this register: he switched to direct color at the same time as he freed himself from Pierre Christin, by doing his own scenarios, in the 1980s. A historical moment in the artist's career as well as in the history of comics.
