GUARNIDO - Lot 118
GUARNIDO JUANJO GUARNIDO Les Indes Fourbes, Delcourt 2019 Original plate n°94 accompanied by its first stage on tracing paper. Signed. Watercolor on paper 37 × 56 cm (14.57 × 22.05 in.) The association of Juanjo Guarnido, the cartoonist of Blacksad, and Alain Ayroles, the scriptwriter of De Cape et de Crocs, was obviously an event awaited by the fans. We are in the Golden Age of the Spanish Empire. A charismatic but really disreputable adventurer, Don Pablos de Segovia, sets out to conquer the "Indies" that were not yet called America. He is in search of a mythical place full of gold: El Dorado. Hailed by the critics and acclaimed by the public, Les Indes Fourbes won a large number of prizes: RTL, Landerneau, etc. This plate represents well this story inspired by a picaresque novel of the XVIIth century: it stands out by its dishevelled rhythm and its dialogues which shoot out in impressive scenes full of noise and fury. Guarnido's art is at its peak, dynamic, baroque and flamboyant. The viewer is literally thrown into the fray. A must-see.
