FRANQUIN - Lot 28
FRANQUIN ANDRÉ FRANQUIN Gaston, Dupuis Original illustration accompanied by its tracing paper of color indications with pantone, intended for a project of sweatshirt for Jet Selection (face) in 1983. India ink on paper 23.7 × 25.5 cm (9.33 × 10.04 in.) Merchandising has always been a subject for the authors of Dupuis since, in the 1970s, Peyo took over the advertising rights of his characters. This control was not only financial: the authors wanted to preserve the spirit of their work. Hence these drawings for a series of sweatshirts: Franquin puts here his character Gaston, in his famous Fiat 509 Coupé Royal. We can find the essence of his drawing which exaggerates a detail compared to the whole (Gaston's head, the wheels), but in a realistic approach typical of the Belgian style, opposed to the schematism of the American and Italian schools. Concerning the colors, Franquin rarely did them himself. On most of the plates, he indicated the colors to the colorists through very precise instructions that he put on tracings. But in this case, as the sweatshirts were printed with special inks in flat, Franquin designates the pure colors of the Pantone range, which became a reference for all graphic designers since the 1960s.
