FOURNIER - Lot 31
FOURNIER JEAN-CLAUDE FOURNIER ANDRÉ FRANQUIN SPIROU AND FANTASIO Le Faiseur d'Or (T.20), Dupuis 1970 Original plate n°14, prepublished in Le Journal de Spirou n°1629 of July 3, 1969. Signed. India ink on paper 36.5 × 45 cm (14.37 × 17.72 in.) Until 1968, Franquin had brought the character of Spirou to the height of perfection and was affected by it to the point of neurosis. This corresponds to a moment when the world of comics shifted from an era where only characters and series (Tintin, Spirou, Lucky Luke) counted to a moment in history when the art of the authors was finally recognized (Gotlib, Bilal, Tardi). Franquin, recently elected to Angoulême, naturally takes the path of an adult comic strip that is mainly aimed at his adult readers. With generosity, he passes the baton to Fournier, not without warning his young successor of the danger of taking over a series that does not belong to him. In these pages, Franquin himself draws the Marsupilami, a character that he decides to withdraw from Dupuis editions to make an autonomous series for Marsu Productions editions, a few years later. It's with a certain tenderness that I see this drawing again, in which the immense difficulties I had to make a drawing likely to please the readers used to Franquin's extreme virtuosity are revealed. And I remember with great emotion the generosity of André who left me the Marsupilami. To soften the shock of the change of artist to the readers, he drew him four times in this plate. Jean-Claude Fournier
