FOLLET - Lot 50
FOLLET RENÉ FOLLET Treasure Island, Dupuis 2013 Original cover by René Follet of the illustrated book after Robert Louis Stevenson. Signed. Acrylic and graphite on paper 33.7 × 43 cm (13.27 × 16.93 in.) René Follet is first and foremost an illustrator and painter in the realist tradition represented by the Belgian Pierre Ickx, the great scout draftsman of the interwar period, but above all by Pierre Joubert, the master of postwar illustration, who was also a follower of Baden Powell's precepts. Follet is, with MiTacq and later Emmanuel Lepage, one of his main heirs. We find his touch here in the classic adventure story of Treasure Island by R-L. Stevenson. The cast includes young Jim Hawkins and especially Long John Silver, represented here as is traditional: a one-legged man, smoking a pipe, with his macaw on his shoulder. A marvel in the mastery of the drawing as well as in the composition and the colour.
